Your care, your choice
You can stop, pause, decline, or change your mind at any time for any reason.
The visit, step by step
-
Who you will see
A nurse trained specifically for this work, called a sexual assault nurse examiner. Every step is explained before it happens, and you can ask questions at any time.
-
Medical forensic care
Your care comes first. The exam can include treatment for any injuries, medication offered to prevent infection, documentation of what the nurse observes, and collecting evidence if you wish.
-
An advocate is offered to you
Under Iowa law you are entitled to one, and you will never have to find one yourself. You are also welcome to bring a trusted family member, friend, or support person.
-
Afterward
You leave with a plan that is yours and a way to reach us. Follow-up care is available, and it is also free.
What we provide
- No appointment needed.
- The clothes you were wearing may be collected as evidence, and we have fresh clothes for you to wear home.
- A private shower after the exam, and an aftercare kit with shampoo, soap, and a toothbrush.
- Emergency contraception and medication to prevent STIs, on site, at no cost.
